What's a tile?

A mini-app
with a screen of its own.

Most desk gadgets ship a fixed set of screens and leave you there. DeskProxy ships an SDK instead: every screen on the device is a tile — a mini-app written in plain HTML and CSS. Build the exact readout your work needs — your build status, your queue depth, your shop's orders, your bench sensors — and put it on glass you can reach.

It works like a web page. HTML and CSS for the view, a pub/sub state bus any tile can publish and subscribe to, and an optional Python worker for background work. No firmware, no C++, no toolchain.
Don't want to write the code? The docs are built to hand to an LLM whole — manifest spec, the full API, working examples. Describe the readout you want to Claude, GPT or Gemini, follow the packaging steps in the docs, and upload the tile to the app — on the screen a couple of minutes later.
Interact with it by touch. Tiles aren't posters, they're interfaces. Bind a button to an action and the tap runs your code — start the job, ack the alert, toggle the relay, scrub the track.
Give it more than one view. A single tile holds several takes on one subject and swipes between them. Weather ships current conditions, a five-day outlook and a multi-city board.
It runs in a secured environment. Every tile renders in its own sandboxed browser view, and can only reach what it declared in its manifest — a list you see before you install. Anything not on that list is blocked — redirects and navigation included. API keys live in the OS keychain and are injected as the request leaves the machine, so the tile's own code never sees them.

You don't start from an empty screen. These ship with the device — the meeting you're about to miss, the portfolio, the deploy you keep checking a tab for, the thing you promised yourself you'd do at four o'clock. Swipe through what's on the glass on day one.

Ten tiles are in the store today and it opens with twenty-plus when the device ships — smart home, focus timers, air quality, currencies, CI status, whatever we and the community have built by then. Browse it from the desktop app, hit install, and it's on the glass in seconds: no firmware flashing, no cables, no restarts. Every one is a tile like the ones you can write yourself, so the catalogue grows faster than we could fill it alone.

A quick command, a real question and an hour-long call are different jobs — so each one starts its own way. Whichever you use, your speech becomes text on your own Mac, and nothing records until you start it.

The wake word is heard on the display itself, and your words are transcribed on your Mac. The audio goes nowhere else.

Only the tile can start it. The wake word and the button can't reach this, so a recording never begins by accident.

macOS today — signed and notarised, Apple silicon and Intel. Windows is in development.* * Not at launch. The device speaks the same USB protocol on any host; it's the desktop app that needs porting, and we'd rather ship it late than ship it broken.

Plug in your own Anthropic, OpenAI or Gemini key — or point it at Ollama and keep every token on your machine. You pay providers directly, at cost. No markup, no monthly AI fee.

🔒 Keys live in your Keychain

API keys are stored in the macOS Keychain, encrypted by your OS — never in config files, never synced to us. We couldn't read them if we wanted to.

🎙 Your voice is transcribed at home

“Hey Desk” commands are turned into text on your own machine with Whisper — always, not as a fallback. Meeting recording is the honest exception: long-form transcription runs in the cloud with your own API key, and only ever starts from the tile.
